The same view before we started and after we finished. Structure, damp and efficiency were dealt with before any of the finishes you can see here.
A cramped galley became a single open kitchen and dining space.
The dividing wall came out and a steel beam went in, signed off by building control. Services were rerouted before any of the finishes were chosen, and the floor was insulated underneath rather than simply covered over.
A dark kitchen turned into the brightest room in the house.
Rather than adding lights to a dark room, we widened the opening to the garden and moved the run of units to the opposite wall. The extra daylight cost less than the lighting scheme it replaced.
Dated and cold, rebuilt around the original fireplace.
The chimney was reopened and lined, the walls insulated internally, and the original mouldings repaired by hand where they had been damaged. Everything that could be restored was restored rather than replaced.
Tired and closed-in, opened up to the garden.
A structural opening replaced the small rear window, and the floor level was dropped to meet the garden so the two spaces read as one. New glazing throughout took the room from the coldest in the house to the warmest.
Damp on two walls, resolved at source rather than covered up.
The cement render trapping moisture in the wall was removed and replaced with lime so the structure could breathe again. Only once it had dried out completely did any decorating start.

The staircase was rebuilt using salvaged timber to match the original profile, and a glazed panel above the return brings daylight into what had been a windowless hall.
